Arnold Split
The Arnold Split reflects the training philosophy of Arnold Schwarzenegger's prime competitive years (1970–1975). The key insight is pairing antagonist muscle groups — chest with back, shoulders with arms — which allows natural superset organization: while the chest is being pressed, the back recovers; while the biceps are being curled, the triceps recover. This allows higher total volume per session without compromising quality, and the twice-per-week frequency for each muscle group aligns with modern evidence on optimal training frequency for hypertrophy.
Who This Is For
- Intermediate trainees who have completed a full-body or upper-lower program and want to increase training frequency and volume
- Athletes interested in the Golden Era aesthetic: broad shoulders, full chest, narrow waist, and proportional development
- Those who can commit to 6 training days per week (the program does not function on 5 or fewer days)

Arnold's Training Principles
- Mind-muscle connection: Visualize the target muscle contracting with each repetition; mental focus increases EMG activation of the intended muscle
- Full range of motion: Partial reps shortchange the stretch-mediated hypertrophic stimulus; Arnold always insisted on full ROM
- Shock the muscle periodically: Vary training order, angles, or loading scheme every 4–6 weeks to prevent accommodation
- Priority training: Train weakest body parts first in the session when CNS freshness is maximal
Progression
- Compound lifts: Linear load increase when all reps are achieved with good form
- Isolation lifts: Double-progression (advance within rep range, then add load)
- Every 4 weeks: Rotate one exercise per muscle group to introduce novel stimulus
- Deload (Week 9): 50% volume for one week
