Starting Strongman
Starting Strongman was developed by Kalle Beck of the Starting Strongman coaching organization as the definitive entry program for athletes transitioning from general barbell training into competitive strongman. Its design philosophy mirrors the "Starting Strength" model — simple linear progression on the barbell base — but integrates event training from the first week rather than treating implements as an afterthought after a strength phase.
Beck's central insight is that amateur strongman events are learnable skills, not just strength tests: an athlete who can deadlift 200 kg will still fail to complete an Atlas stone event without technical training, and a beginner who spends months on barbell-only work before touching a yoke will simply be an intermediate barbell athlete with poor event skills.
Who This Is For
- Athletes with at least 6 months of barbell training experience
- Deadlift ≥ 1.5× bodyweight, Back Squat ≥ 1.25× bodyweight as minimum entry standards
- Competing in a first or second amateur competition within 12–16 weeks
- Does not require existing event experience — the program builds it

| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Deadlift + Squat + Posterior chain |
| Tuesday | Overhead + Upper back |
| Wednesday | Squat + Events (stones, log) |
| Thursday | Events (farmer, yoke) + Pulls |

Event Progression Guidelines
Weeks 1–4: Technical Foundation
- All implement loads are sub-maximal; technique is the only goal
- Log: focus on the clean (floor → lap → shoulder)
- Atlas stone: lap position before any loading
- Yoke: empty or minimal load; step pattern and core stability
Weeks 5–8: Load Introduction
- Begin adding implement load systematically: 5–10% per 2 sessions
- Log: first attempts at near-competition weight at 70%
- Farmers: begin adding load when 20 m sets are comfortable
- Atlas: introduce tacky from Week 6
Weeks 9–12: Competition Simulation
- At least one session per week at competition-standard loads
- Simulate 2 consecutive events without rest (farmer carry followed by log press) to practice event-to-event transition
Key Rules
- Never miss a session for grip fatigue. Grip is the most common limiting factor at the beginner level and is a training adaptation, not a fixed trait. Train straps-free on farmers and stones. Add straps only when testing max loads.
- Log first, barbell overhead second. For competition-focused athletes, every overhead session should begin with the log, not the barbell. The log's center-of-mass offset and wrist position must be the primary motor pattern being reinforced.
- Linear progression will fail — that is the signal to advance. When the 5 kg/week deadlift increase stalls for two consecutive weeks, the athlete is ready for
